Target audience, is a specific group of people at which a product or the marketing message of a product is aimed at.

One of the biggest mistakes that branders make is trying to appeal to everyone.

ASSIGNMENT:

Find four ads that would fit each of the categories:

  • young children
  • high school students
  • bikers
  • retirees

Create a Doogle Doc and paste these 4 images there.

Analyze each ad by answering the following questions for each image.

Questions to ask

  1. Who is the target audience?
  2. What is being advertised? (product, service, political ideas, etc.)
  3. What is the color scheme of the ad? How many colors are used? Dominant color?
  4. How does the color scheme support the product to make it attractive for the audience?
  5. Is there an emphasis in the ad?
  6. How many typefaces are used in the ad? What typefaces are used and how they support the product? What is the color of the text?
  7. Is there a lot of text? Is it easy to read? How much of this text would you read?
  8. How many images are used in the ad? Are they big or small? Are they easily seen? Are they good quality?
  9. Overall impressions:
    do you like the flow of the ad? why?
    is it simple, elegant, busy, confusing
    do you think the ad works?
  10. BONUS:
    Would you change the ad? How?

EXAMPLE

  1. Who is the target audience?
    athletes
  2. What is being advertised? (product, service, political ideas, etc.)
    product: shoes
  3. What is the color scheme of the ad? How many colors are used? Dominant color?
    mostly achromatic (greyscale) with a splash of 2 colors
    – red and yellow
  4. How does the color scheme support the product to make it attractive for the audience?
    red is a logo color, yellow is an accent color, both yellow and red are energetic colors, yellow focuses on the shoe action
  5. Is there an emphasis in the ad?
    web address and text, shoe
  6. How many typefaces are used in the ad? What typefaces are used and how they support the product? What is the color of the text?
    2 fonts (in the logo and
    the main text), all white
  7. Is there a lot of text? Is it easy to read? How much of this text would you read?
    Not a lot of text, simple font is easy to read, I would read only the large text block
  8. How many images are used in the ad? Are they big or small? Are they easily seen? Are they good quality?
    2 images: athlete and shoe, both are easy to see, excellent quality
  9. Overall impressions:
    do you like the flow of the ad? why?
    is it simple, elegant, busy, confusing
    do you think the ad works?
