You will have to submit responses that answer the following two prompts

Use 600 characters maximum, including spaces for each answer.

Your responses to the prompts are evaluated along with the images you submit:

  • Answer each prompt in the space provided. Do not merge or combine prompt responses.
  • The most successful responses relate clearly to the images of work submitted and provide further evidence of inquiry-based sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision.
  • You must identify all pre-existing work(s) in the Written Evidence portion of your portfolio.
  • Although responses are not evaluated for spelling, grammar, or punctuation, you should make sure your responses are written clearly (e.g., don’t use extreme text speak or eliminate spaces between words).

1. Identify the inquiry that guided your sustained investigation

. This response is limited to 600 characters (including spaces) and should define a clear, research-based question or inquiry, not just a topic or theme.

Key Requirements:

Focus on Inquiry: State a specific question or inquiry that drives discovery, experimentation, and research.

Avoid Simple Topics: A theme like “landscapes” is too broad; an inquiry like “How can I use mixed-media collage to explore the psychological impact of urban environments?” is specific and guided.

Specificity: Include specific materials, techniques, and visual approaches in your description, as shown in AP Art & Design Digital Submission Guide.

Connection to Visuals: Ensure the written inquiry directly relates to the 15 images submitted.

Example:

“I am exploring how I can use high-contrast lighting and exaggerated color palettes to represent the psychological tension of anxiety in daily scenes. My investigation focuses on how I can create a sense of unease through composition and color choices in portraiture and interior design. I will investigate how materials like oil pastel and watercolor can be used to create, respectively, sharp, intense lines and blended, hazy backgrounds that represent the duality of anxiety.”

2. Describe ways your sustained investigation developed through practice, experimentation, and revision

Key Focus Areas:

Practice & Experimentation: Describe materials, processes, and ideas used to explore the inquiry.

Revision: Explain how work was modified based on earlier trials or research.

Synthesis: Connect the “why” behind the artistic decisions to the overarching inquiry.

Example:

I initially used pencil sketches to map out composition, then experimented with [specific material] to increase texture. After finding the texture too chaotic, I revised my process to include a masking technique in images 5-8 to highlight specific focal points, allowing me to better explore my inquiry of [SI Topic]
