- conditioning clay
- following the process
- working with underglazes
- glazing
Underglazes are special ceramic colors that can be painted directly onto clay before glazing. Unlike regular glazes, they don’t move or run when fired, so you can use them almost like paints to create detailed designs, patterns, or images. They show their true colors best when covered with a clear glaze, which makes them glossy and vibrant. With underglazes, you can layer, mix, or even carve through them (sgraffito) to add depth and creativity to your work.
examples:
STEPS
Roll the slab
Roll out a medium-to-thin clay slab, making sure it’s even in thickness.
Prepare the mold
Place a Styrofoam tray (or similar shallow form) upside down on your work surface.
Cut your slab slightly larger than the tray to allow for trimming later.
Flip and shape
Flip the slab over the tray mold.
Lay a sheet of plastic wrap between the clay and tray to prevent sticking.
Gently press the slab into the mold, smoothing it evenly into the shape.
Trim to size
Use a knife or needle tool to trim away the extra clay along the tray’s edge.
Keep edges neat and even.
Dry slowly
Cover loosely with plastic and let the plate dry slowly to prevent warping.
Avoid placing it in direct air flow.
Refine the surface
When leather hard, smooth the edges with a damp sponge.
Make sure the rim is even and the surface is clean.
Decorate with underglaze
Apply underglazes to the leather-hard or bone-dry plate.
Use brushes to paint patterns, designs, or images.
You can layer colors, carve through them for sgraffito effects, or add details once dry.
Final steps
Allow the piece to dry completely before bisque firing.
After the bisque fire, add a clear glaze coat to seal and enhance the underglaze decoration.
