InDesign: calendar
Create a one-month calendar layout using Master Pages
Master pages (or “parent pages”) in InDesign are templates used to apply consistent elements—like headers, footers, logos, and page numbers—across multiple pages automatically.

STEPS
step 1: setup & Master Pages

Create a New Document: 11 x x8.5 inches
Pages: 1 (for now)
And just to make sure you have your tools’ options available: Window > Workspace > [Essentials Classic]
Save the file in a NEW FOLDER.
You will keep all images in that older as well.
Open Pages Panel. Let’s take a look at what’s there:
A-Parent (formerly Master Page) is your reusable layout template.
What it does:
- Anything placed on the A-Parent appears on every page it’s applied to
- Keeps layouts consistent and fast
Examples:
- Page numbers
- Headers/footers
- Background graphics
“None” is exactly what it sounds like—no template, no repetition, just a blank stage.
What it does:
- Removes any parent layout
- Leaves the page completely independent
When to use it:
- Cover page
- Special layout page
- When you don’t want repeating elements
None means this page is doing its own thing..
We are going to use A-Parent to create and reuse the calendar grid.
We do not need a spread layout – so select one of the A-Parent’s pages and delete it.
Now let’s create that calendar grid on your A-Parent page. Double-click on it to enter master page mode.
Everything you add to the A-Patent will appear on all of your pages.
All elements in a good layout are always aligned. So start with displaying a grid.
View > Grids & Guides > Show Document Grid and Snap to Document Grid
Preferences > Grids
Set the grid preferences as shown.
step 2: Sunday block

Let’s start with the first day unit.
Use Type Tool and drag a text frame. Type in Sunday.
Align Center (Paragraph Panel)
Vertical text alignment: center (in the Options Panel).
Choose a Typeface and adjust the font size.
Use Properties Panel to set the text frame dimensions.
Let’s apply color for the text frame. Double-click on the fill swatch.
Select a color for Sunday. Let’s save it as a swatch.
Click on Add CMYK Swatch button.
You will see a new swatch in the Swatches Panel.
Double-click on the swatch and rename it “sunday”
Uncheck “Name with Color Value” box.
Now the color is saved and easy to find.
Now let’s change the color of the text itself.
In the Tools Panel – click on a small letter T right below the color swatches. This will set the colors to the text mode.
In the Swatches panel: choose a text color. If you want – you can double-click on the T swatch and select a color, then save it in Swatches – just make sure you give it a specific name.
For white – use “paper” swatch.
Save.
step 3: date block

Drag a text frame 1.375″x0.875″
Position it directlu under the Sunday frame.
Type in any number and align to the right.
Choose a font that will work with other fonts, increase the size.
Give the number some space.
Sheft the text to the left in the Paragraph Panel.
Shift the text down using the baseline shift in Character Panel.
Choose a color for te date block and save it as a swatch.
Swith to Text mode and choose a color for the number. Save it.
step 4: building a grid

Duplicate the date block and form a Sunday column.
Carefully align the blocks. They should snap to the document grid. You can also use Align panel to make sure they are aligned.
Apply white stroke to all block to visually separate them.
Next – group all frames. Object > Group
Duplicathe the column to have a total of 7. Align the first one to the left margin and the last one to the right margin.
Select all columns and align them. Then evenly distribute them.
Save
step 5: colors

Choose colors for the rest of the week days.
Save swatches
step 6: Title

Time to add the title and any other text to the layout.
Open Layers panel
Renale the layer to “calendar” or “days”
Create a new layer above. This is where we are going to place any text or graphics that will go over the calendar grid.
Drag a tet frame and type a month title. Choose a font, a color, resize.
On the same layer add another text block. Use it for a monthly quote or a monthly joke.
step 7: background graphics

Add another layer below the calendar grid.
Create an image frame. Place an image inside (Flie > Place).
Your A-Parent (Master page is done!!!)
Save.
step 8: pages

Click on the Page 1 in Pages Panel.
Now everything we do – we do it in this page. It will not affect the Parent.
To edit a master object on a specific page, hold Ctrl+Shift (Windows) or Cmd+Shift (Mac) and click the item.
Click on the month title and type an actual month name.
Click on the quote text and type in your text.
Remove the nubers from days that are not a part of the month.
You can leave it like that or…..
You can delete these days completely… or…
Swap the stroke/fill color swatches in the Tools panel. That will create the appropriate color as a stroke.
I would align the stroke inside the path to visually have the same dimensions as the rest of the day blocks.
step 7: graphics & images

Replace the image with a more appropriate one for the season.
To mark holidays or any day you want to add an image to:
Select tat day block and change the fill color to “none”.
Then lock the calendar grid layer and select the bottom layer.
Draw the image frame that is the same size as the day block:
1.375 in x 0.875 in
Place an image.
Add more graphic elements if you feel like it.
step 8: more pages

To add more pages with the existing calendar grid – drag the A-Parent below Page 1. Now you have two pages.
Edit it the same way for the next month.
