steps

cut & curl

paper sculpture technique

1. Use a knife and cut the top edge of the square.

Then make vertical cuts following the lines.

paper sculpture technique

2. Use a round pencil or another object to add volume by curing the paper stripes.

bend

paper sculpture technique

Cut random paper shapes.

paper sculpture technique

Glue them on one by one bending and creating volume.

Glue them to the base or to each other. Stay inside the square.

pleat

paper sculpture technique

Cut out the template for this section (the one on the right). Use a burnisher and score over each line. This will make the fold edges nice and crisp.

paper sculpture technique

You can substitute the burnisher with a knife and score light cuts over the lines.

paper sculpture technique

Fold the piece “acordion” style.

paper sculpture technique

Apply glue to the base lines.

paper sculpture technique

Press the piece to the base.

tear & layer

paper sculpture technique

Use thicker paper. Tear bigger pieces first, then smaller ones.

Glue them onto the base stacking them up in layers.

on-edge relief

paper sculpture technique

Cut thin stripes from the worksheet.

You can shape them into any enclosed shape or curl them, fold, etc.

paper sculpture technique

Glue them onto the base square forming a design.

crumble

paper sculpture technique

Prepare some tissue paper.

Apply some glue onto a small area.

paper sculpture technique

Use teared tissue paper and glue it onto this area while crumbling the paper and creating wrinkles.

paper sculpture technique

Fill in the entire square.

cut & weave

paper sculpture technique

Use wider stripes for weaving.

Try using different types of paper for additional effect.

cut & fold

paper sculpture technique

Use a knife to cut the two hanves of the oval.

paper sculpture technique

Score the folding lines with a burnisher.

paper sculpture technique

Fold the two halves. Now this oval has volume that includes the negative space.

twist & roll

paper sculpture technique

Cut stripes of different width.

paper sculpture technique

Roll some of them and twist some.

paper sculpture technique

Glue them onto the base creating a design with repeated elements. Twisted paper creates a great texture when placed next to each other and creating a flow.

Rolled paper of various heights creates an interesting accent (focal) point. Experiment!!
