Start with good quality images. For example, you can search for photographs on They are free and have an open license.
Make sure you choose appropriate selection tools for nice, sharp selections.
Add drop shadows and highlights where necessary to make the architecturel details "belong" to your food item. Curve the selections if necessary.
Feel free to add characters to your artwork.
